An Introduction to
CNC Routers
Firstly, what is a CNC? CNC is an acronym for computer numerical control. In layperson’s terms, they use a computer to control a machine automatically.
CNC router machines have evolved and are more affordable, making it more cost-effective to bring production in-house. Our CNC routers can handle the most challenging of jobs 24/7 and are suitable for many industries and budgets.
CNC router machines are also invaluable to any enterprise looking to manufacture wood, plastics, and soft metals. Additionally, all of the Opus range of CNC routers are easy to use, allowing even inexperienced users to commence CNC machining once our friendly engineers have completed your on-site training.
We appreciate that purchasing a CNC router is a substantial investment; we always recommend visiting us before purchasing so you can check out the machine and meet our team. A demo of the different CNC machines also ensures the right CNC router is recommended.
Our CNC machines have been installed in many sectors, reducing human error and material wastage and increasing productivity and profitability. Industries such as campervan conversions, kitchen makers, exhibition builders, education, and sign and print benefit from the possibilities offered by an Opus CNC router machine.
The Full Package: What is Included with all Opus CNCs?
Delivery
All 1313, 1325 and 1530 models are delivered by a curtainsider lorry. Therefore, a forklift is required to offload. 2030, 2040 and 2060 models are delivered by a HIAB, so no forklift is required to offload.
Installation
One of our experienced engineers will carry out the full installation, including the wiring in of the extraction unit. It normally takes approximately one day for the installation of an Opus CNC router.
Training
We carry out full machine and software training with all Opus CNC routers. The engineer will tailor the training around your capabilities and needs in a friendly and patient manner.
Warranty
All of our CNC routers include 2 years full parts and labour warranty. Warranty can be extended if required. We also carry out annual services to ensure longevity of the machine's operation.

Do I need an automatic tool change (ATC)?
Do I need an automatic tool change (ATC)?
- Efficiency and Productivity: An ATC allows a CNC machine to change tools automatically without manual intervention. This reduces downtime between machining operations, leading to increased efficiency and productivity. Operators can load multiple tools into the ATC magazine, and the machine can select and change tools as needed, enabling uninterrupted machining.
Complex Machining Operations: Many machining processes require the use of multiple tools with varying geometries and functionalities. With an ATC, a CNC machine can switch between different tools seamlessly, enabling it to perform complex machining operations without requiring constant manual tool changes.
Reduced Human Error: Manual tool changes are susceptible to human error, such as selecting the wrong tool or misaligning it. An ATC eliminates these errors by precisely selecting and positioning the correct tool according to the CNC program.
- Cost Savings: While the initial investment in an ATC system might be significant, the long-term benefits in terms of increased production, reduced labor costs, and minimized errors can result in significant cost savings over time.
Unattended Operation: An ATC-equipped CNC machine can run unattended for extended periods. Once programmed, the machine can automatically change tools and continue with the machining process, freeing up operators to focus on other tasks or run multiple machines simultaneously.
Reduced Setup Time: When a machine needs different tools for various operations, a manual tool change can be time-consuming. With an ATC, setup time is significantly reduced, as the machine can swap out tools with minimal delay.
Consistency and Accuracy: An ATC ensures that the same tool is used consistently throughout a machining process, leading to greater accuracy and consistent results. This is particularly important in industries where precision is critical, such as aerospace or medical device manufacturing.
- Increased Flexibility: CNC machines with an ATC can handle a wider range of tasks and materials. The ability to change tools quickly allows for more versatile machining, making it easier to switch between different types of cutting, drilling, and finishing operations.

EXTRAS
All Opus CNC routers can be fitted with one of these attachments. Please note these are bespoke CNC routing machines and are made-to-order. If you are looking for a specialised CNC router, speak to one of our CNC experts for professional advice.
Oscillating Blade
A robust cutting tool intended for heavier, thicker and harder materials than a traditional knife can accommodate. Full directional control of the blade allows straight edges and sharp corners to be cut cleanly and accurately.
Tangential Knife
The tangential knife is suitable for softer materials such as leather, rubber and single-ply cloths which tend to fray easily, and require cuts to be cut with clean edges. This is especially beneficial for those who are specialising in textiles.
Creasing Wheel
The creasing wheel attachment is a permanent fixture which allows the user to crease materials such as cardboard with precision and accuracy. Packaging manufacturing favours the creasing wheel as it removes human error and gives much cleaner results.
Rotary Device
Enables full 360° rotation of the workpiece for the perfect cylindrical carving and engraving, making it possible to machine profile bars and posts, such as newels for staircases and table or chair legs, with speed and ease.
Drill Bank
A universally applicable drill head with a variety of drill bits included for a wide range of different machining. The drill bank is perfect for use with a vast selection of materials, including non-ferrous metals, plastics, woods and composite materials.
CCD Camera
Automatically adjusts the cutting tool path position to keep within captured register marks on the workpiece. This is especially useful when cutting out ready printed designs where inaccuracies may need to be compensated for.

CNC Automatic Loading and Unloading Tables
We all know how tricky it can be loading large sheets of material onto a CNC machine manually.
All of our CNC routers can be manufactured to accommodate our automatic loading and offloading tables; making material placing a whole lot easier!
Just ask one of our engineers for more information.
Enhanced Vacuum Bed
Upgraded Vacuum Suction
A common concern with standard CNC routers is the loss of suction at the edges of the vacuum bed. Why? Most CNC routers have a standard bed layout with uniform shallow channels. These superficial channels restrict the airflow as it moves away from each vacuum hole, giving a significant loss of suction.
The newly designed vacuum beds on an Opus CNC router comes with a tapered vacuum matrix bed with much deeper grooves radiating away from each vacuum hole. This tapered grid bed allows maximum airflow throughout without restriction, even to the extremities of each bed zone.
Upgraded Vacuum Zoning
We have also redesigned the vacuum bed zones to incorporate maximum suction when using different size materials. The CNC routers with at least a bed size of 10′ x 5′ offer optimal suction when using sheet sizes of 8’ x 4′ and 10’ x 5′. The grid left, of a 10′ x 5′ CNC router machine, shows how the vacuum zones will incorporate these UK standard sheet sizes, as well as the entire bed size to ensure full CNC machining.
What are the benefits of owning a CNC router?
Bringing production in-house has many benefits. Firstly, you can control production timescales and manage quality control. As human error is inevitable, having a CNC router removes some of those risks as you can visualise the end product beforehand and allow the CNC router to do all of the work. Lead times can also be determined when production is self-controlled and not reliant on outside sources.
You can also enjoy the endless possibilities of new product development. For example, the vast and different range of available tooling and materials for CNC routers has grown over the years. It offers users the versatility to manufacture products they would not necessarily do by hand.
A CNC router can also carry out intricate work, which wouldn’t necessarily be possible with a hand tool. Additionally, allowing the CNC router to do all of the work releases the user to engage in other projects.

Firstly, thank you to Opus CNC for supplying us with our new machine. We had a few issues our end with electrics before install but Opus was very helpful with the information they provided and holding onto the machine until we was ready. Secondly, the engineer Daniel was 5*. He was very professional, cleaned up after himself and well mannered. The training was brilliant, no question was too silly! He took his time with us and explained stuff properly which meant we felt like we wasn’t rushed. He only left when we said we was happy, he seemed like he would have stayed until midnight if we wasn’t sure on anything! We have had to message once, about something we wasn’t sure on - told us exactly what we needed to do within minutes. Honestly, generally such a good experience!
